How old should a person be before they start hunting deer? I'm having huge arguments with my in-laws about this topic. I was 6 years-old when my father bought me a cross-bow, but I didn't get my first deer until I was 8. They think I'm full of it and told me that it's way too young to be shooting a firearm. Where I came from (Ohio), most kids were out hunting with their fathers/brothers.
Why cant you use a Rifle in some states for deer hunting? I live in Illinois and its a shotgun only deer season, and i know Ohio is, what are some other shotgun deer states? Why are they only shotguns? do they think its not hilly enoogh and the bullet can go too far w/o being stopped by something? thanks I know already rifles move much faster, my 243 shoots over 3000 fps, and my shotgun shotos under 2000, i know about guns and everything, i just ddint know excactly what the states claim as to the reasoning of using rifles.
Can I hunt deer on my friends property in Ohio without a license? someone told me that i just had to get a tag, but not the whoole nine yards for a license.
Is a remington 700 cambered for 30-06 the gun for me? Boar, deer, elk, is this an all around good gun? I live in Ohio where you cant hunt deer with a rifle,(This is fine with me by the way) but here is my situation. There is a lot of wild boar that I could hunt and we are planning to go caribu and mule deer hunting next year. I am a big beliver of the right gun for the right game but I don't need more than one large rifle since 99% of my hunting is done with shotguns and varmit rifles. I don't know a lot about large rifles but I was told that the Remington 700 in 30-06 will work game from boar to elk. Anyone agree or disagree? Anyone have a better suggestion?
Ohio hunting? Can anyone find out for me all you can about my uncle, Lynn Cleary, and what happened in the state of Ohio about 5 years ago while he as hunting and picked up deer antlers. he was like arrested, banned from ohio for a couple of years, and a 17pointer dear he killed was put in some museum in ohio or something. please find out all you can.

I am not hunting for the sport of it I don't beleive in hunting just to hunt, I am just going to get a deer to get, and that's it.
Hunting regs on coyote hunting in Ohio? First off, I do believe you are allowed to hunt coyotes with a rifle but is there a max or min on caliber size? I'd like to use my 7mm Rem Mag. Also, does it matter if it's a semi-auto rifle as I plan on buying a AR in the next couple months and I know 7mm is a bit overkill? What are hunting hours? I believe it's 24/7 except for deer season in which hunting hours are the same as deer hunting hours. Lastly can you hunt public land such as state parks for coyotes with a rifle.?Thanks.
anyone know about shed hunting in toledo ohio? are the deer droping antlers in toledo ohio yet? the area i look at is in maumee ohio in sidecut metropark. we just saw 3 bucks with antlers still tonight does that mean all of them havent droped yet?
What is the minimum velocity required for good bullet expansion? I deer hunt in Ohio and use both a 20 ga shotgun and a .50 muzzel loader. Both are shooting saboted hollow points. Where can I find information on the minimum velocity required to expand these bullets as intended
what is the deal with animal rights people? I am a hunter and fisherman, A few years back while deer hunting in ohio we took a deer into a check station and has a group of people verbally atack us. Saying things like what did that deer ever do to you and calling us names and such.. My view is that we hunt because we love the animal. Hunting isent just about killing (yea its nice to eat a big tender loin or some deer sasuage) but its about the experance. Not only that but hunters save the animals they love from inbreeding, diseses, over population and deth of the species.. why cant tree huggers see that?
How to put a plug into a Mossberg 500 ? I'm going deer hunting in Ohio on Monday morning. You have to have a plug in the guns and they are only allowed to hold 3 slugs. I was told that you could take out the screw at the end of the gun. I did that and when I did that there was another set of threads where the screw was at. I bought a plug from Walmart and I need to put it in the gun.I need some help on doing this if anyone can help.... Thanks

A good hunting gun.? I need a good hunting gun that dosent kick. I live in Ohio, so I cant hunt with a 22 caliber. I just hunt the usual, deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel. Dont ask questions, just answer my question, PLEASE. Its not that im afraid of the kick, or it hurts me.I think it messes up my aim. :::example::: I shot my 2 4-10s and hit the outside of the target once and missed the target once.I shot a .22 cal. and hit a bulls eye.
what food plot would be the best to plant secret spot or biologic hotspot for the place i hunt? i live in gibsonburg ohio i am thinking about planting whatever is the best on a powerline trail i hunt for whitetail deer.
what will happen if you shoot a slug through a regular shot barrel? My brother and I are going hunting tomorrow (hopefully). He borrowed a gun off of our dad. Its a winchester model 1400, 12 gauge. The thing is, here in ohio you have to shoot deer with slugs, not regular shot. He does not have the slug barrel neither does my dad (the original owner of the gun). Could he safely shoot a slug (to be exact, the winchester XP3 2 and 3/4" shell)? how can i tell what type of choke is in it?
How many woman out there are hunters? Just curious how many women hunters there are out there? My husband has always hunted and one of our sons loves to hunt. Never had any desire myself to hunt, but I decided to take the hunters safety coarse and give it a try and I love it. In Ohio its bow season, and I'm doing it and never thought I was good enough to get one with a bow, but I did and I got a 7 Point buck. I was so proud, and I did it on my own, hunting with a friend. My husband was pretty shocked I think when I called him on the cell phone and disturbed his hunting for the help to track my deer down and drag him out of the woods. What a proud day it was. So just anxious to hear about other woman hunting!
any one on hear from ohio? i'm still looking for land to hunt? 45yr old bow hunter seeking permission to hunt, nuance ,urban for groundhog, deer, coyoat
Hunting Gun advice needed? I am a bow hunter, but it's deer gun season. In Ohio, we can only use muzzleloaders or shotguns. What would you all suggest be a good first gun? Should I just buy a BASIC 12 / 20 gauge with interchangeable barrel or some muzzleloader? I have this deer season, fox, boar, etc. I want something that will get the job done, but nothing overly fancy. Thanks in advance
How many people love to hunt and hate PETA? I love to hunt coyotes year around, in Ohio there are no bag limits, open season is year round and you can even hunt them over bait or at night. It's awesome, such a rush to see a group come into a call and drive 3 or 4 at once!!! I also hunt deer, turkey, squirrel, fox, duck and have been known to nail a groundhog or two when the chance arrives. Also I hate PETA and anti-gun freaks that want to take my rights away. The NRA is so big PETA and anti-gun groups will never stop gun-owners and hunters. Plus all they do is complain and cry but they never do anything for the environment like conservation, planting food plots for animals or river-cleanups like most sportsmen do. So how many here hate hunting and gun owners. And if you do why do you come into the hunting section and try and "educate" us and stop us from hunting. I figure for every anti-hunting PETA freak that comes into the hunting section and trolls I will do the same here..
What type of high powered rifle should I get? I am wanting to buy a high powered rifle for myself, and I am not exactly sure what is best. I want to buy a rifle the rifle that has the best distance, and the best accuracy. I was told by a few people 30-06 is what I want. Is this what I want? I don't plan on hunting deer with it, because i live in Ohio, and it is illegal to hunt deer with a rifle, but I will be hunting coyote with it. I am in the spending range of less than $500. So I am hoping that you know what I am looking for. Thank You. P.S.: The person with an answer that has great reasons why i should buy a certain rifle will be rewarded with a best answer! So I would like some reasons or facts with your answer please. Or at least as much as you know. Thanks, Matt
Ohioans! Just had to share this with you...? This is sooooo spot-on its hilarious. Check it out and leave your comments, please! Oh, and GO BUCKS!!! You might be from Ohio (pronounced O-hi-uh), if: You think all Pro football teams are supposed to wear orange! You know all the 4 seasons: winter, still winter, almost winter and construction. You live less than 30 miles from some college or university. You know what a buckeye really is, and have a recipe for candied ones. You know if other Ohioans are from southern or northern Ohio as soon as they open their mouths. You can spell words like Cuyahoga, Olentangy, Bellefontaine, Tuscarawas, Wapakoneta and you know which letter is doubled in Cincinnati . "Vacation!" means spending a day at Cedar Point in the summer and deer hunting in the fall. Your school classes were canceled because of cold. Your school classes were canceled because of heat. You've had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day. You know what should be knee-high by the Fourth of July. You end your sentences with an unnecessary preposition. For example: "Where's my coat at?" You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked. You think of the major four food groups as corn, pork, beer, and Jell-O salad with marshmallows. You carry jumper cables in your car. You know what 'pop' is. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow. The local paper covers national and international headlines on one page but requires six pages for sports. Sorry for the random typos and weird spacing.. I copy and pasted from an email.

Help with purchase of a crossbow? I have about $1,900 to spend on a crossbow. I'm looking for one that could take down a bear but for it to be under 200 lb's draw weight. I live in ohio and I guess the maximum legal draw is 200 lbs. I probably won't be hunting bear for a long time, but when I want to and know where to go, I want to be able to. I'll probably be doing target for a while and then go to hunting deer and medium game, and then work up to bears. I need to know whats the best for/under $1,700 (need to buy accessories and arrows and only have $1,900 in total) I only want one single crossbow that can do everything I need. I don't want to buy one for practice and thats it. I need it for practice and hunting of medium to "dangerous" game. and under 200 pounds of draw weight. I also need it to have a cocking aid. I don't feel like pulling all that weight everytime. preferably a crank aid.
Family living on 35k debt free? Does anyone else believe this is a load of crap? When I was growing up we were poor as can be and I'm sure 20+ years ago that was realistic but now ... I don't see it. I mean as child I grew up poor. We grew our own vegitables, had farm animals, hunted deer and rarely bought a lot of food at store. We canned the vegitables and made food up that HAD to last the year. Clothes and shoes were hand me downs or presents for xmas and even if they didn't fit you had no choice, we had two shitty cars that barely ran, no heat even during the winters in Ohio, never had tv or cable ... Both my parents worked and my brothers and sisters held down under the table jobs and I started working very young cleaning for people. And it was hard growing up like that and this was years ago ... These people have to be lieing .. Growing drugs .. I dunno it just makes no sense!!!
Why care about Hillary? She can't lead her own marriage much longer a country. She voted for us to be in a war against Iraq which has put our troops in harms way. Then she changes courses when things seemed to have gone downhill for the war. Now down below I copied some good reasons why Hillary should not be elected from a website http://www.tpmcafe.com/story/2005/11/18/19734/514 1) Front Runners Always Go Down- Howard Dean was the front-runner for our nomination in 2004, and was the man to beat. As a result, he took on the vast negative attacks that stripped him of the nomination, and maybe the Presidency. In 2000, John McCain had the lead on Bush and he himself was taken down by a smear campaign. Hillary will not be spared of these attacks, and with all of the past scandals her opponents will have a lot of ammo to fire. By the time Iowa comes she will be stripped of her momentum, and will place behind in polls. 2) The Media questions her ability to be elected- The people who vote in primaries are the ones who watch CNN or any other news network each night. Anchors already question if Hillary could even win in California, one of the more blue states. The voters are going to want someone who is competent, and can win and will end up voting for John Edwards, Mark Warner, Evan Bayh, or Russ Feingold or any other leading male candidate. Like Dean the electability issue will strip her from the nomination, and unlike Dean maybe rightfully so. Could you really see Clinton winning over swing states like Ohio or a Southern state like Virginia in the national election? 3) Polls are Questionable- She may have a 30 point lead, but really are these polls right? The answer is yes and no. Yes in that amongst the typical everyday Democrat responded with Clinton. So there is no doubt that the people actually answered with the candidate with last name Clinton. No, as in the people that are polled are not the ones who necessarily vote in primaries. You know the type the ones who would vote in the main election but too busy to vote in primaries. They primarily answer by name recognition, and Clinton is one very popular name. Also, this early on no one knows the unknown candidates like Bayh, Warner or Russ Feingold whose primary campaign makes the candidates known to the public. 4) Liberals can smell a phony- One thing we do not like is a liberal maneuvering to the middle in order to win. We respect and maybe vote for legit moderates like Bayh, Warner, or Bill Clinton in 1992, but not someone who moves to the middle to prove her ability to be elected. Plus, her unyielding support for the Iraq War does not sit well in our bellies. 5) She does not have the stuff to win- Hillary is down right smart, and many people who know her personally say that she is has a charming personality. The problem is when she gets in front of the microphone she puts on an act that is total business and no personality. Voters love a candidate, who can are competent, gets serious, but can also show a more personal side in public. Bill Clinton was able to do this and won over America, as did JFK, and even a John Edwards. Also, in these desperate times, voters are looking for a competent politican to fix are ailing woes, and will be very reluctant to take a gamble with a first ever woman President. Make voters would question her ability to protect America, and to win the conflicts that we are engaged in, a voting block that we need to win over to take back the White House. 6) First primaries and Caucus are in more rural places- If the first primary state was in urban state like New York, I would say she had a pretty good shot. The first states are in more rural states. Iowa voters will want someone that represents them, and a candidate from an urban state will not. You'll counter argue that Kerry won in this state. Kerry, did well since he was a veteran, and marketed himself as guy sitting on back porch drinking a beer, normal type guy. Also, he had the cash to put him to the top. Hillary will have the cash, but do you see her, as a candidate who could sit down with voters on the porch and have a beer, trying to win their vote? Really, try to picture it. I sure in the hell can't. Now, you are probably thinking to yourself what in the hell does being able to have a beer on some voters porch have to do with anything? Well up front not a whole lot, but deep down it is a matter of connecting with the voters, and seeming like one of them. Iowa, like my home state is a lot like that, you farm till sundown then you go home, sit on your porch and have a relaxing beer. Hunting is also big in Iowa, and rural states. Could you see Hillary with hunting camo on, shooting at deer or ducks? New Hampshire is more moderate as well, it is one of those swing states. Plus, if we change our lineup, and add a Southern state like Mississippi, will voters want her to be the nominee there or someone like Mark Warner, Evan Bayh, Wes Clark, or John Edwards? My aim in this article is not to question Hillary’s competence, which I respect in many ways, and she is a member of my party. I am merely showing why I think she will not win the nomination, and if she does we will be licking our wounds once again in 2008. I personally know many loyal Democrats who would say hell no to voting for Hillary. Then I hear people mention to me that Hillary is running for President, and they always ask me if she can win, you know my answer, now what is yours?

What will you be hunting for? Tomorrow is October 1st. The start of the biggest month in hunting.(At least it is in Ohio). Its deer season in Ohio and there's camouflage hanging on everyones clothes lines. Will you be using a compound or crossbow?? And to the women,, do you get upset when your spouse goes on a hunting trip? I don't. I help him pack his bags.LOL. Really, I don't mind if he goes. October is an exciting month at my house. What about yours? October is the month for my guys. They prefer bow/arrow over gun that's why I said that October is the best month. Mr. Thinker.....would his name happen to start with a J ????? LOL
Best Ammunition to use and scope?? I'm hunting in Ohio and this will be my first year. I will be using a 20 gauge shotgun what will be the best shells to use to hunt deer? And what scope can I get for my gun and will it be accurate?
What is the overall temperament of a deer? I know it's a silly question, but I'm just curious. I'm not a hunter, nor do I ever plan to hunt. I'm asking b/c the park where I run is heavily populated with deer (or I guess I could say that their home is heavily populated with people!). When I'm on the trails, I can almost touch them, they're so close. I don't attempt to approach them or anything. I go about my business and they go about theirs, but I know they are aware of my presence. If one needs to cross the trail, I'll stop my run at a good distance and allow them to cross the path. They seem really peaceful, but my mother begs to differ. She thinks that if provoked, if they feel threatened or if they think people are too close to the fawns, they will attack. Any information you can give is greatly apprecaited! Oh - if it makes any difference I live in Ohio. Yes, I am. There are houses and businesses near the park, though the park itself is a "preserve" and is heavily wooded.
