pheasant hunting? is it ok to shoot a pheasant that is still on the ground or does that defeat the purpose of the hunt
Pheasant hunting without dog. Can you help with any tips? I just started my first season hunting pheasant with one partner. We dont have have a dog, so we have been trying on foot. I was wondering if its even worth it and how we improve our hunt, what type of areas do pheasant usually hide in.
Archery Hunting For Pheasant? Has anyone heard of or better yet done any pheasant hunting with a bow? If so, how successful were you? Also, where can I find out more information on this? Thanks in advance.
Which ammo for pheasant hunting? I will be going to Kansas for a pheasant hunting trip. I have never been before. I know #5 shot is the right shot size but what length shell do I need, 2 3/4" or 3" ? I will be using a 12ga. Also, any specific brand of shell recommended?
Is a single shot shotgun OK for pheasant hunting? Starting up pheasant hunting and need to know whats the best type of shotgun to use. Is it practical enough to use a singleshot shotgun considering it's less than a hundrad dollars? And I want to get a 12 gauge. I also hear people talking about adjusting the choke, what do they mean by that? Thanks.
Any good tips or ideas for training a dog for pheasant hunting? I have a black lab that's 6 months old now, she's fairly well trained at this point on the basic commands. I've taken her out in the woods for excercise to get her in good shape so that she'd be able to handle hunting in the fields. Just wondering what some good tips or training strategies work best. Especially for staying close, not chasing birds 100 yards away, listening when getting super excited. Those were problems with my previous dog but she learned what to do after a few times. My pups now already knows what BIRD means, I've hid a dummy bird with a pheasant winning on it and she's really good at sniffing it out. So she should know what to look for just a matter of teaching her everything else. Any help on the matter is appreciated.
Pheasant hunting jacket? My room mate pheasant hunts with a couple of guys who have a blaze orange shooting jacket with fleece like shoulder and arm coverings on the outside - I've been searching all over the internet trying to find it for him - any one know what I am talking about and where I can find it. Thanks in advance The fleece coverings on the shoulders and arms are gray.
Lowdown on North Dakota pheasant hunting.? I am interested in hunting the south-western part of the state and was wondering about the bird population, availability of ground to hunt, attitude of the locals to non-resident hunters, etc?
Pheasant hunt? I am thinking of booking a pheasant hunt and of course the fist place that pops into my head is S.Dakota.I have also heard good things about Iowa and Kansas and was wondering if any one here has hunted any of these states and which of these you would recommend. Also, with S.Dakota being the hot spot does that make it more expensive than Iowa or Kansas.Im open to suggestions if any one has hunted any other states for a resonable price. Thanks Ruth, please dont come on to the hunting section if it offends you Thanks for the answers everyone,as always you were very helpful
Which would you rather use/have for all around hunting? (deer, goose, duck, turkey, rabbit, pheasant, etc)? A 12 gauge Benelli Nova Pump - shoots 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" and comes with F, M, IC chokes. weights 7.9lbs. costs $390. Or A 12 gauge Winchester Speed Pump - shoots 2 3/4" to 3" and comes with F, M, IC chokes. Weights 7lbs. Costs $399
Do you draw a distinction between HUNTING and KILLING (deer, elk, wild turkey, pheasant, etc) and....? The merciless killing of DOGS used in dogfighting rings? Is ALL killing the SAME in your eyes? After all dogs, like deer, elk, etc are animals too, right? This is the argument some of Vick's "friends" have been spouting as they desperately find justification to stand in support of him. @ mossyoakhunter What? you think I'm supporting dogfighting? umm...can you read? or, do you simply jump to your own conclusions? I've done my share of Pheasant and Deer hunting growing up in Pennsylvania, so I know very well why we hunt.... BUT, let's remove the reasoning that it's for FOOD to put on the table... it's for SPORT or wildlife conservation....we can always go to Safeway markets to get the food we need. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have a freezer full of Venison either but, it's not out of necessity like it was 100 years ago. I believe the way I asked my Question confused many of you...that's my fault for not making myself more clear. In short, I was hoping that you would agree that LEGAL HUNTING was NOT the same as KILLING dogs as some of Vick's friends have alleged. They say there's no difference just because they are ALL animals. I do know the difference. Your passion for what occurred in this animal abuse atrocity by Vick and how I worded my Question explains how many of you misconstrued my intention and your criticism directed toward me.
My Junior Hunting License?? Long story short I won a free pheasant hunt and the guy that taught the hunter safety course i went through said something about needing an upland bird stamp or something like that.. but there is no place on my Junior License for that.. There is a blank white area and in the top right is a place to affix a federal duck stamp, and below that there is a sticker thing that says: 2007/2008 Harvest Information Program Stamp Do i have the right license?? I am 14. I live in California
Bird hunters......where can I find bird hunting books, dvds and magazines? My hubby likes to go dove hunting. He has been talking about hunting pheasant and turkeys next year. I'd like to know where I can find information about this for him. Like reading material that you find for bow hunting deer. (he bow hunts and has a ton of magazines on that) I'd like to get him information about food plots and other stuff like tips for hunting. Please recommend some reading materials or dvds for me to get him as a gift.
how can I learn to hunt pheasant with my dog? I am a 34-year-old female who recently aquired a german shorthaired pointer (bird dog) and would love to take her out in the field. I love game birds and would also love to learn to hunt myself! I live in the Bay Area, CA and was wondering if there was a place we could go and learn... to add detail... My dog is a purebred, she has no training but I have introduced her to pheasant scent with oils, wings, etc. She can hunt, and we have shot a cap gun over her so she is not gun shy, but she is young and if she catches a scent she is GONE! My deal is learning to handle a shotgun, what gage to use? I have shot before but my upper body is weak and I bruised my shoulder and almost took my thumb off!
Good Hunting boots? I am trying to find a good pair of hunting boots, it seems like every time i buy a pair of boots they only last me a season. I hunt deer, pheasant, quail, turkey, duck and sometime hog. I am not in very tough conditions at all, I live in Oklahoma, the coldest I hunt in is usually about 30 degrees or so. Anyone got any suggestions? price is not an issue, although the cheaper the better. Any suggestions?
Beagle hunting training question, please look if you are familiar with training beagles.? I would really like to get a beagle, and i love to hunt all game. Is it possible to train a beagle to hunt: rabbits,Pheasants, and ducks? I know that they dont do well with cold water, but i have a friend who we normally use, that can handle bad weather. But is it possible to train a beagle to hunt all those. I have lots of patciance and will try anything. Thanks
hunting gear for dogs?? I'm looking for a good hunting collar for my dog, she will being field hunting this fall for pheasant and quail, I would like a collar that also has the beep on point option... anyone got any ideas?? Thanks! actually dogs enjoy hunting, THROUGHLY, it's what they are born to do instinctivly, nobody says you're not allowing the dog to live by training them to sit or stay are they?? also, she doesn't kill the bird, she points to where they are, the birds are stirred shot and the dog retrives it, the dog does not do the killing.
Was that a canned hunt where Mike Huckabee shot his pheasant? Seems like it would be a canned hunt, after all, publicizing Huckabee going hunting and having him not shot anything wouldn't look good. On the other hand, I found nothing in the news which says Huckabee had a canned hunt. Which would follow in Dick Cheney's method of hunting: throw things in front of your face where you can slaughter it, also shoot anyything that moves, even a person. BTW, I'm prohunting but I think canned hunts are disgusting. Too many deer around here, causing car wrecks and getting people killed, wish there was year round deer hunting. no, I am not in Iowa, so I didn't know that canned hunts are illegal there, if that is true, great. Inferred from reports those pheasants were held captive to be released in front of Huckabee's face to blast away. Looks like that is legal in Iowa too. doesn't make it less disgusting. photos show a big media entourage following Huckabee, seems like the noise would flush out truly wild birds before a shot can go off.
Yellow Lab Hunting Capabilities? We have a six month old Yellow Lab that we will be sending off to hunting training when it warms up a bit. He's highly intelligent and he's excellent now at fetching/retrieving. Just started working with him to find and he's doing really well for just starting on that. He can also do the other mainstay things such as sit, lay, shake and roll over. Working on stay though... :) He understand voice commands or just hand commands. Anyway, enough bragging. Obviously Labs are most well known for their retrieving skills, especially with ducks. My question is getting input as to what others think of this breed being able to track, dead hunt, etc other birds such as pheasant, chukar, quail, etc. Thanks for your input!
Best all around shotgun Please help I am new to hunting? I live in Nj and just aquired my permit to purchase, one for shotgun and one for pistol. My question is I want to hunt for deer, turkey, pheasant, And some small game.My dilema is that I don't want to own ten different guns. What would be my best all around choice? What is a good recipe for Pheasant Pot Pie? I had some pheasant pot pie the other day and it was phenominally delicious. I was told the recipe came from Rice Creek Hunting, a game animal organization, but I can't find anything on their website. If someone could post a good recipe (with sources please) for pheasant pot pie, especially if it's from Rice Creek Hunting, I would greatly appreciate it!
Dad hunted and shot a pure white pheasant. Is this rare? It was totally ALL white. No red or anything on it like the other white pheasants. I tried searching for pictures of one like this on google but couldn't find any that looked like it. So...is this really rare or what? Thanks! I'm not sure if its albino because its eyes are dark greyish. it was in Oregon State
Hunting prey vs. Hunting predators? After doing some research, I understand and respect some of the reasons why people hunt animals like deer, pheasants, moose, elk, rabbit etc. But what I can't understand is how people shoot the beautiful wolves in Alaska and other places. Isn't that causing wolves to become more threatened than they already are? And how they do it with a helicopter is unfair to the wolf, it has no chance. I'll appreciate some opinions.

Hunting Myspace Layout/Background???? I'm looking for a hunting myspace background. More specifically a duck or goose hunting one. Maybe a pheasant hunting one would be cool too, but i'm leaning more towards a waterfowl one. I don't want a generic camoflauge one either. I want something unique or special. I've been to most of the ordinary sites and found a couple ok ones but nothing i'm crazy about. So if anybody could find a cool waterfowl hunting background it would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks a lot!!!
Deer hunting in the UK? I have heard that it is outrageously expensive to hunt in the UK,Is this true?I have always been interested in hunting Roe deer but heard that its to expensive and complicated for a blue collar guy from America like me to hunt there, all of this I have heard through friends and co-workers and I figure that I would come right to the source and ask here.Would it be possible to offer a trade hunt, where someone that has the access to hunt in the UK to trade for a hunt for whitetail deer and maybe pheasant hunting in Michigan,or some outstanding fishing in the great lakes, thats done here in America, does it work that way there too?thanks for any info Hey,thats pretty helpful, thanks guys,
What do people usually wear pheasant and other gamebird hunting? New hunter here. What does one usually wear gamebird hunting, or pheasant hunting in particular? I notice wal-mart has "upland game shirts"/"upland vests" for sale (tan color with safety orange patches). Is this the norm? Would I look like a complete idiot if I wore some deer hunting garb? (a camo jacket with an orange vest)? I'm not asking so much for vanity value but what's functional and what will work out on the field. thanks for the help!

Briar pants for pheasant? I am going pheasant hunting thursday in northwestern Pennsylvania, and need a new pair of briar pants because I outgrew my old ones from when I was 12 or 13 and haven't gone pheasant since then, so what are a cheap but reliable pair I could buy. A good store? I don't really want to spend alot on them, as long as they can last through this season. THanks.
does anyone know where to hunt pheasant in SEK? I would like to get my kids into pheasant hunting I moved to girard 3 years ago and would like to find a place to take my wife, daughter, and son to hunt some pheasant for their first time
Is a 670 12 gauge choke appropriate for pheasant? Or will I need a different choke? I was invited to hunt pheasant with a friend of mine, and haven't before. I'm not really shotgun savvy, so I don't know how tight or wide that pattern is compared to other chokes. Shotgun is a Mossberg, but not sure of the model number. It's not the model number, it's the actual type of choke and I have no idea what it means, other than a 680 is slightly tighter. I could have that backwards though...
what is the best way to hunt pheasants in the rain? Today is my only day off and i wanted to go pheasant hunting, there is ALOT of hunting pressure here and its raining, so where would be the best place to look for pheasants in the rain? there are corn fields here with standing and downed corn, cattail marshes, a creek bottom, hedgerows/shelterbelts. and waist high weeds. ive never hunted pheasants in the rain after alot of pressure has been put on them, any advise/tips would be great!!! thanks
